Microsoft challenges Apple, Amazon with the launch of new Xbox music service

Microsoft has launched its new digital music service, the Xbox Music, in a bid to compete with iPhone maker Apple's iTunes and Amazon's Cloud Player, which will be offered for the Xbox game dashboards.

Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business president Don Mattrick said the launch of Xbox Music is a further step in making simpler digital music on every device and on a global scale.

"We're breaking down the walls that fracture your music experiences today to ensure that music is better and integrated across the screens that you care about most -- your tablet, PC, phone and TV," Mattrick said.

The US based software maker is also planning to expand the service to Windows software-based computers and tablets that include the approaching Surface tablet, from 26 October 2012, following the launch of Windows 8.

The all-in-one music service that allows users to freely stream custom-created playlists, subscribe to the required music or allows downloading of favourite songs.

Features of the new service includes free-streaming radio, the Xbox Music Pass which allows music purchasing option, Xbox Music Store, Smart DJ, cloud storage, social music and platform expansion.

Xbox Music service will be offered in about 22 countries globally while the US software maker is also considering launching the new service to Apple iOS and Google's Android devices in 2013.
