Faults show Lake Tahoe area's shaky past

As a cross-country skier trekked through the wilderness near Lake Tahoe 15 years ago, he noticed something odd about the trail he'd taken. The hill crest that had been beneath his skis abruptly dropped off, then picked up again about 20 feet away.

As luck would have it, the skier was a geologist, and the oddities of that trail ? including the offset moraines, or ancient glacial deposits, he noticed that day ? helped him piece together the seismic hazards underlying the Lake Tahoe region.

"As you walk along these very prominent geologic features, all of the sudden, that same feature is now over there," said James Howle, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Carnelian Bay, Calif. "These long, linear moraines are very abruptly offset, and I couldn't help but ask, 'What caused that?'"

Howle has been studying the region ever since. He's now identified five active seismic faults, which point to important landslide and earthquake hazards ? potentially up to magnitude-6.9 temblors ? for those living near Lake Tahoe.

Finding faults
Together, the five faults make up the Tahoe-Sierra Frontal Fault Zone, which lies between the Sierra Nevada and the west side of Lake Tahoe. Geologists had known about several of these faults before Howle's latest findings, which were detailed online May 18 in the journal Geological Society of America Bulletin, but heavy tree and brush cover made the area difficult to survey.

Using LiDAR, a type of laser radar that can "see" through dense vegetation, Howle's team precisely traced the five faults and measured their offsets, or the distances seismic activity had moved land on each side of the faults. They also found, from radioisotope data, that the glacial moraines in the region were 21,000 and 70,000 years old ? an important piece of the puzzle that scientists hadn't known before, Howle said.

The data allowed Howle's team to calculate how fast the land along the faults is moving. The rates they calculated are two to three times greater than had been estimated, he said. [ 13 Crazy Earthquake Facts ]

Those slip rates boil down to significant seismic risks. A rupture along any of the five faults could generate a magnitude-6.3 to 6.6 quake, the team calculated. If two or more adjacent faults ruptured together, they could produce a magnitude-6.9 or greater quake.

"The seismic hazard itself hasn't increased," Howle told OurAmazingPlanet. "The faults have always been there, the hazard has always been there, we just didn't have the data to quantify it until now."

Quakes and slides
What do the findings mean for those who call Lake Tahoe home? Be prepared, advised Howle, who lives in the area and has no plans to relocate.

The faults have not produced any major quakes since people have been living in the region, but that doesn't mean they won't, he said. The team doesn't have enough evidence to determine exactly how often earthquakes recur along these faults, but Howle estimates it's on the timescale of thousands of years. Since they don't know when the last quake occurred, the next could hit at any time.

What's more, earthquakes aren't the only danger. The team's LiDAR images show evidence of massive ancient land and rockslides associated with the quakes.

"It's kind of a latent hazard, and people don't take it seriously because there hasn't been much seismic activity here in historical times," Howle said. "But these new data clearly show the faults are active. They haven't ruptured while we've been around here, but they have been active in recent geologic time."

Meola, Reyna, Armstrong inducted into US Hall

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:05 p.m. ET May 30, 2012

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) - Former U.S. national team goalkeeper Tony Meola, captain Claudio Reyna and defender Desmond Armstrong were inducted into the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame on Wednesday, along with former women's national team coach Tony DiCicco.

The four were honored before the United States' exhibition game against Brazil, as was longtime Los Angeles Times soccer writer Grahame L. Jones, who was given the Colin Jose Media Award.

Meola made 100 appearances for the United States and was the starter at the 1990 and 1994 World Cups - the first two trips for the Americans since 1950 to soccer's showcase event. He broke down in tears during his acceptance speech as he talked about Lamar Hunt, the late owner of Kansas City's Major League Soccer franchise. Meola was a part of Kansas City's MLS champions in 2000 and its U.S. Open Cup title in 2004.

"He was a gentleman," Meola said, sobbing.

Meola also playfully talked about growing up in youth baseball and soccer programs in New Jersey and how he kept trying to convince coaches he should be a center forward.

"I'm just trapped in a goalkeeper's body," the husky Meola said.

Armstrong, also a member of the 1990 World Cup team, made 81 international appearance. He spoke emotionally about his seven children in the audience. He talked about the days when there was little money for training gear in the U.S. national team program.

"For us it was just a white T-shirt with no U.S. Soccer emblem," he said. "We used to steal these things."

DiCicco coached the American women to the 1996 Olympic gold medal and their second World Cup title three years later. He credited players such as Mia Hamm - who was sitting in audience - Julie Foudy, Brandi Chastain and Briana Scurry with the team's success.

"Did I actually do anything?" he said.

Reyna was unable to attend the ceremony because of a family matter.

The hall building in Oneonta, N.Y., closed in February 2010.

FOR KIDS: Cool Jobs: Wide world of robots

The machines can help with everything from surgery to disaster response

Web edition : 2:03 pm

When you think of robots, you might think of something like Wall-E ? a machine designed to perform boring tasks, such as compacting trash.

But engineers today are making robots that can do much more interesting jobs. Robots shaped like snakes could one day search for victims after an earthquake or help doctors perform surgeries. Underwater robots might be able to lead fish away from environmental disasters. And humanlike robots could help people with diseases or physical disabilities.

Computer virus briefly hits Iran's oil industry

(AP) ? Iran's key oil industry was briefly affected by the powerful computer virus known as "Flame" that has unprecedented data-snatching capabilities and can eavesdrop on computer users, a senior Iranian military official said Wednesday.

The comment is the first direct link between the emergence of the new malware and an attack inside a highly sensitive computer system in Iran, which counts on oil revenue for 80 percent of its income. The full extent of last month's disruptions has not been given, but Iran was forced to cut Internet links to the country's main oil export terminal presumably to try to contain the virus.

It would be the latest high-profile virus to penetrate Iran's computer defenses in the past two years, boosting speculation that Israeli programmers could have struck again.

Experts see technological links between Flame and the highly focused Stuxnet virus, which was tailored to disrupt Iran's nuclear centrifuges in 2010. Many suspect Stuxnet was the work of Israeli intelligence.

Gholam Reza Jalali, who heads an Iranian military unit in charge of fighting sabotage, claimed that Iranian experts had detected and defeated the "Flame" virus. He told state radio that the oil industry was the only governmental body seriously affected and that all data that had been lost were retrieved.

"This virus penetrated some fields. One of them was the oil sector. Fortunately, we detected and controlled this single incident," Jalali said. "We could also retrieve the information that was lost."

Jalali said there has been no report of any other governmental agency being affected by the virus.

Iran's government-run Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center has said the highly sophisticated Flame virus appeared linked to espionage, but cited no specific country or source. International suspicion, however, immediately fell on Iran's archfoe Israel.

Israel's vice premier did little to deflect suspicion about the country's possible involvement in the cyberattack.

"Whoever sees the Iranian threat as a significant threat is likely to take various steps, including these, to hobble it," Moshe Yaalon told Army Radio when asked about Flame on Tuesday. "Israel is blessed with high technology, and we boast tools that open all sorts of opportunities for us."

Ali Hakim Javadi, Iran's deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology, was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying Wednesday that Iranian experts have already produced an anti-virus capable of identifying and removing Flame from computers.

The Computer Center "has produced an anti-virus capable of detecting and removing the Flame for the first time in the world," IRNA quoted Javadi as saying. "The anti-virus software was delivered to selected organizations in early May."

The Russian Internet security firm Kaspersky Lab ZAO said the Flame virus is unprecedented in size and complexity.

Kaspersky's conclusion that the virus was crafted at the behest of a national government has fueled speculation it could be part of an Israeli-backed campaign of electronic sabotage against the Jewish state's archenemy.

The virus can activate a computer's audio systems to listen in on Skype calls or office chatter. It can also take screenshots, log keystrokes and ? in one of its more novel functions? steal data from Bluetooth-enabled cellphones.

Aftana.ir, a government-run website, said the Flame has been active since 2010, the same year when a virus known as Stuxnet disrupted controls of some nuclear centrifuges and some other industrial sites in Iran.

Iran has acknowledged that Stuxnet affected a limited number of its centrifuges ? a key component in the production of nuclear fuel ? at its main uranium enrichment facility in the central city of Natanz. But Tehran has said its scientists discovered and neutralized the malware before it could cause serious damage.

Iran says is has previously discovered one more espionage virus, Duqu, but that the malware did no harm Iran's nuclear or industrial sites. Jalali said Flame is the third.

Iran says Stuxnet and other computer virus attacks are part of a concerted campaign by Israel, the U.S. and their allies to undermine its nuclear program and economy.

Good Oral Hygiene is Essential to Protect the Teeth and Gums from ...

Gum disease describes swelling, soreness or infection of the tissues supporting the teeth and manifests in two main forms, gingivitis and periodontal disease.

Some version of gum disease is likely to affect most people at some stage in their lives and very often will not be noticed in its early stages which emphasises the importance of good oral and dental hygiene and regular check-ups with the dentist.

If left untreated mild gum disease can develop into periodontal disease and this can affect not only the gums but the underlying bone, which can be eroded and cause the teeth to loosen and eventually fall out.

This may then mean considerable cosmetic dental work or the need for dentures or implants, but it can happen that some forms of cosmetic dentistry can only be carried out if there is enough underlying bone to which to fix them.

The cause of gum disease is the plaque that can be deposited on teeth and contains bacteria that can impair the health of teeth and gums and therefore needs to be removed every day with brushing and flossing.

Patients who smoke are more likely to produce bacterial plaque, which leads to gum disease.

The gums are affected because smoking causes a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream, so the infected gums fail to heal. Smoking causes people to have more dental plaque and for gum disease to progress more rapidly than in non-smokers. Gum disease still remains the most common cause of tooth loss in adults.

On its own in some cases brushing and flossing may not be enough and should be supplemented with regular visits to the dentist for more professional scale and polish treatment. A half hour appointment during the working day is possible if there is a dentist in the business district where the patient works, like the Brisbane CBD.

It may also be that to be sure of removing the bacteria the dentist will carry out root planning work that generally involves a local anaesthetic before the work is done. Although periodontal disease cannot be cured it can be control and this will help prevent further erosion of the bone and the risk of losing teeth altogether.

A lost tooth can compound problems because the result is greater strain on the surrounding teeth. It can affect the bite and also increase the risk of further decay because of the food that can get packed into the gap.

While advances in cosmetic dentistry mean that a lot can be done to restore or replace damaged teeth, the treatments can be costly and take some time so it is always better to take care of the natural teeth with good dental hygiene and regular check-ups with the dentist.

If this is Britain?s energy policy, we?re toast

By James Delingpole:

?Global warming? is SO totally over. Even President Obama concedes this now. The problem is that after twenty years or more of infectious drivel from the richly-funded global junk science community (NASA, the Royal Society, the ?University? of East Anglia?s Climatic Research Unit, the National Academy of Sciences, etc), the minds of too many politicians have been poisoned, and too much damage has already been done.

Which brings us to Energy Secretary Ed Davey?s draft energy bill. It?s a disaster. It will, if implemented, do untold damage to the British economy and the British landscape. So much is obvious to anyone with half a brain or the merest smattering of knowledge about Britain?s approaching energy gap, about the utter uselessness of ?renewables? and about the shale gas story. Yet it seems that few in our political class can see it. And that those who do ? Graham Stringer, Peter Lilley ? seem not to have enough clout to make any difference.

CAM Highlights a Different Approach to Pain Management

12792 Valley View St., Garden Grove, CA ? Americans are increasingly looking for a way to manage their pain and mitigate ailments without resorting to prescription medications. These types of pharmaceuticals can often feature side effects that can be as debilitating as the disease itself. To demonstrate this point, a study known as the National Health Interview Survey showed that about 38% of patients actively sought out CAM solutions. CAM is a new concept in healthcare and is an acronym for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. While CAM may be new to some, the professionals at Acupuncture of America have been helping Garden Grove patients for years. The term complementary medicine refers to use of these methods in conjunction with conventional medicine. Generally, CAM combines Western medicinal practices with other forms of healthcare such as acupuncture and massage therapy to provide its patients with complementary variety.

The ?A? in CAM stands for alternative medicine and refers to the use of alternative remedies instead of conventional medicine. As a component of complementary medicinal technique, acupuncture is emerging as a widely accepted modality for pain management. In fact, the efficacy of acupuncture has been cited in many respected medical journals including The Journal of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. One study concluded that acupuncture employed both before and after certain types of surgery expedites wound healing, reduces the levels of required pain medication, and drastically lowers drug side effects. Prescription pain medication can build up in the system to a point that the body will create a high tolerance to the substance. In essence, a high tolerance means that increased levels of medication are needed to relieve pain. Millions of Americans suffer from chronic pain that can prove to be exhausting. This exhaustion can trigger other symptoms such as depression, anger, and fatigue.

Some patients that suffer from persistent pain become depressed, take over-the-counter NSAIDs daily, and can end up having stomach problems because of it. Many doctors prescribe stronger medications to keep patients comfortable so that they can perform their day-to-day activities. The problem with this type of pharmaceutical treatment is that it does not treat the problem and the side effects can lead to gastrointestinal issues, kidney damage, and even heart disease. Chronic pain is a condition that CAM therapists at Acupuncture of America can help handle. Whether it involves acupuncture, cupping techniques, chiropractic, or therapeutic massage, CAM has helped tens of thousands of patients live pain-free lives.

While every patient is different and requires different types of sessions, they often report an instant improvement after only one session and complete pain mitigation after three to four treatments. Acupuncture professionals in Garden Grove evaluate each patient individually, starting with a thorough examination that includes the patient?s medical history. The use of acupuncture or other CAM therapies for pain management after surgery or as a way to relieve chronic pain in place of long-term pharmaceuticals can be an extremely effective way towards living a healthier life.

Nelson mayor behind local government push

A disconnect between local government and the provincial and federal governments was apparent to Mayor John Dooley after meeting with 86 other community leaders at last week?s inaugural BC Mayors? Caucus.

?I was going over there with an open mind, but it was actually very interesting to see that most people are facing the very same challenges in the province regardless of the location or size of their communities,? said Dooley.

While no action items were agreed upon, the mayors announced in a press release on Friday that they support the following statement:

?BC communities are frontline service providers for our citizens and we are seeking a new partnership with the provincial and federal governments in the best interests of all of our communities. The BC Mayors? Caucus requests an immediate discussion on the efficient use of existing resources to better address the challenges our residents face.?

Dooley said there are too many programs that are changing both at the provincial and federal levels that now have to be picked-up by the municipal governments.

?They are just being abandoned for the most part by the province or the feds and we?re left holding the bag,? he said. ?A prime example is housing and social services. The ad hoc way in which grants are handed out and the parameters around which grants are handed out, there is not common sense attached to them.?

The mayors broke into smaller groups during the Mayors? Caucus held in Penticton and Dooley was surprised at how similar the topics of conversation were between the different communities.

?I went through a similar exercise a few years ago at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and an example of what came out of that was the infrastructure deficit,? he said. ?It was an exercise that clearly indicated that was a challenge from coast to coast to coast. The same thing happened at the Mayors? Caucus.?

A steering committee was formed at the Caucus including nine mayors who will decide on a list of action items leading up to the next meeting prior to the meeting of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities.

?I really don?t think people going to Penticton had any idea that we would be on similar page at the end of the day, had we known that I think the meeting in Penticton would have been more action oriented,? he said.

?The bottom line is we want to be thoughtful about this decision and we want to be very calculated in how we manage going forward because we expect results,? he said. ?There is no point in going out with two barrels blazing without being able to support fully our requirements and a strategy not only for us to manage the requests but also for the province and the feds.?

Big Builders Reduce Land Banks By Half As They Cut Inventory, Debt

Source: Business-standard By Dilasha Seth 25 May 2012

?

Land banks of many leading realty players have shrunk by as much as 50 per cent in the past three to four years, as they try to cut their mounting debts.

Real estate developers went on a land accumulation spree before 2007, as the property market was attractive. But the subsequent economic crisis weighed on their balance sheets and cash flows.

?

Analysts say this is not a major reason to worry about since the inventory turnover ratio is intact, as the pace of launches has come down along with diminishing land reserves.

DLF, India?s largest real estate company, had 349 million sq ft of land at the end of December 2011, compared to 751 million sq ft in March 2008. It has a net debt of Rs 22,758 crore, which it plans to reduce by Rs 5,000-6,000 crore by March 2013, through the sale of non-core assets like Aman Hotel, NTC land in Mumbai and wind business.

"Sanjay Sharma, managing director of?Qubrex, said land banks shown by developers were not generally the fully paid-up ones."

In an analyst call in February, the company said its land bank was shrinking due to its strategy of plotted development, which required more land compared to group housing projects. DLF launched 7.25 million sq ft till the third quarter in plotted development, against 1.22 million sq ft in group housing.

?With plotted development, land banks fall. In a group housing, you sell two-three times more on the sale land due to greater floor space index,? said Anubhav Gupta, analyst at Kim Eng Securities. DLF had started focussing on plotted development to deal with inflation, as it is less construction-intensive. Recently, it sought to limit strategic land purchases in areas such as New Gurgaon and New Chandigarh. This was in contrast to the pre-slowdown days when most developers used to divert customer advances from project sales to buy land, said an analyst.

Unitech, for instance, had a land bank of 605.4 million sq ft in March 2008. But by December 2011, its land bank was estimated to have declined to about 304 million sq ft.

Analysts say holding inventory comes at a cost, as one has to service debt continuously. Moreover, it results in delay in project delivery, as builders don?t have cash flows to complete projects.

Unitech is in the process of selling land parcels to pare its debt, which stood at Rs 5,190 crore as of December 2011. It had targeted to reduce its debt by Rs 500 crore by the end of 2011-12, but did not disclose the debt figure in its recently announced fourth-quarter result, which saw its net profit fall to Rs 2.26 crore.

Gupta said the inventory turnover ratio, or sales over inventory (land banks), stood at seven-eight. This means developers have land to develop over the next seven-eight years, given that the same pace of construction is high and not required. However, the ratio has not come down significantly, as the pace of new launches has come down significantly along with shrinking land banks.

HDIL, which had a debt of Rs 4,100 crore as on December 31, 2011, is also looking to sell land parcels. It had a land bank of 217 million sq ft as of September 2011, compared to 220 million sq ft as of July 2010. Most of its lands are in Mumbai. HDIL recently sold a two-acre plot in Andheri, Mumbai, to the real estate arm of Adani Enterprises for Rs 900 crore.

Parsvnath had a land bank of 209 million sq ft in April 2008, which declined to 199 million sq ft by December 2011. However, according to a presentation to its investors in February 2012, the company has paid Rs 3,650 crore and is yet to pay Rs 2,614 crore of the total land cost.

3 (Almost) Effortless Ways to Recruit New Church Members with Social Media

priest with laptop

This is a guest blog post by Drew Key.

With almost everyone and their pet rock on Facebook, Twitter, and other social sites, places of worship have a huge pool of potential new members that they are largely ignoring. It is easy to understand why most churches don?t effectively market themselves on social media.

One reason is that some churches object to the idea of ?marketing? themselves, even though the story of Christ is the most successful viral marketing campaign since time began; Jesus literally split time (B.C./A.D.) after all.

But the main issue churches face by putting themselves out there on social media is time. Someone has to take the time to actually do it. And with budgets already extremely tight, the social media duties usually fall on an unpaid volunteer who normally has other commitments with the church, family, and/or the larger community. But you don?t have to hire a full-time social media specialist to have an impact. Here are some ways you can almost effortlessly market your church.

1. Have your congregation promote the church for you.

A preacher, pastor, or priest has his or her most captive audience on Sunday mornings. One way to get this captive audience to reach out on social media for you is to work a Facebook or Twitter status update into your sermon. At the church I attend, the pastor recently gave a sermon and used social buzzwords which he related to a biblical principle. Your church could do something very similar and actually have all the members of your congregation get out their smartphones and post a biblical status update.

2. Create a Facebook page for your church and get members of the congregation to ?Like? it.

There are four key things here. First, you have to create your church?s Facebook page. This is actually really easy to do, just go to this URL to get started:?http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php. It?s very easy to do with these step by step instructions.

Second, you have to let your congregation know about the page, so they will ?like it You can have it announced during Sunday services and ask your church volunteers to inform all of their Facebook friends.

Finally, you have to put a ?Like Box? on your website so that visitors will be shown the faces of people they know that currently ?Like? your church. The way the ?Like Box? works is that when someone visits your church?s website, they?ll be shown the names and faces of people they know. When they see some of their friends that like your church, they?ll know someone they can talk to about your church if they are considering making a visit.

3. Use Facebook to invite people to events.

Facebook has become the ultimate ?meeting? place for like-minded people and friends alike. Facebook enables you to invite all of your friends to an event and set an event time, place, and other event details. The user has the option to select if they are attending, if they might attend, or if they are not attending. This allows the creator of the event to track, communicate, update, and inform invitees on the published event.

In Conclusion

Social media doesn?t have to be hard or cumbersome to take advantage of. Besides your time, it doesn?t cost anything to use in order to reach current or potential members. Even if you don?t want to implement all of these suggestions, take one or two and run with it. I think you?ll notice more people buzzing about your church. The more buzz you get, the more potential members you are reaching.

Memorial Day BBQ Made Cheap & Easy | Blonde & Balanced

This is a guest post by Andrea Woroch.

Memorial Day honors the sacrifice of our nation?s heroes and represents the unofficial start of summer. Though this three-day weekend is a popular traveling holiday, many families opt to stay home in an effort to avoid the crowded highways and inflated airline prices.

Hosting a Memorial Day barbecue is a fun way to celebrate the long weekend at home with family, friends and neighbors. Make the most of your BBQ with these budget-friendly entertaining tips:

1. Make it BYOS
Stands for ?bring your own something.? Determine what will set you back the most and ask guests to bring their own. For example, request friends bring meat to cut down on the cost of the main course and accommodate dietary restrictions. Beverages, desserts and side dishes are other popular potluck items. Ultimately, guests are happy to help out, but avoid asking them to bring everything ? you?re the host, after all.

2. Buy Meat in Bulk
If suggesting guests bring their own meat goes against the Grill Master code, buy the meat in bulk to cut down on the cost. Keep in mind that chicken is cheaper than beef, and ground meat is cheaper still so prepare a menu based on prices. Though great food is a big part of any successful BBQ, guests are really there to mingle with friends and no one expects filet mignon. Don?t forget, leftover meat can be frozen so don?t worry about buying too much.

3. Think Reusable
Though paper plates are convenient for parties, they?re not always the most frugal choice, nor the most environmentally friendly. Instead, opt for durable, plastic dinnerware from a department store to be used again and again throughout the summer. Kohl?s has some great options, and you can score extra savings with online coupons from this site. Your local dollar store is another gold mine for cheap plastic ware that can be washed and reused throughout the summer.

4. Save on Condiments
Whether you?re cooking up burgers or serving juicy steaks, you?ll likely need condiments and seasonings to complement your spread. Compare labels on store brand and name brand products to ensure you?re not paying more for flashy advertising. Some generic brands are made by the same manufacturers of the name brands, so it pays (literally) to comparison shop and review unit prices to determine the best value.

5. Chop Your Own
It may be tempting to purchase prepared foods ? like pre-chopped veggies, fruit and other produce ? for the convenience, but these dishes are marked up over 40 percent. Take the time to buy these items whole and chop them yourself. You can prepare veggie and fruit dishes a day before the barbecue so you?re not stuck in the kitchen while everyone else is having fun.

6. Stock Up on Staples
Since Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer entertaining season, many retailers are competing for business and offering barbecue supplies at their lowest prices of the year. May represents the best time to buy grill accessories and necessities, including spatulas, brushes and charcoal. Hold off on replacing that outdoor grill until the end of the season, however, when retailers reduce prices to make room for winter essentials.

7. Keep it Safe
Bacteria-related illnesses are prevalent during the summer thanks to poor storage practices. The rule of thumb in keeping stomach-turning bacteria at bay is to keep hot things hot and cold things cold, according to a recent article on MSN Health. Don?t let burgers or grilled meat sit out on the table for late-coming guests, and be sure to place mayo-based salads on ice or in the refrigerator for self serving.

8. Have Fun
Children aren?t the only ones who like to play games. Corn hole, badminton and board games are fun activities for all ages and can help break the ice among adult guests who are meeting for the first time. Download free trivia game apps on your smartphone or create your own pictionary for cheap DIY alternative games. Don?t forget the tunes: Download free music apps like Pandora and stream your playlist from your smartphone to a portable speaker to get the party started!

Researchers identify protein necessary for behavioral flexibility

Thursday, May 24, 2012

Researchers have identified a protein necessary to maintain behavioral flexibility, which allows us to modify our behaviors to adjust to circumstances that are similar, but not identical, to previous experiences. Their findings, which appear in the journal Cell Reports, may offer new insights into addressing autism and schizophrenia?afflictions marked by impaired behavioral flexibility.

Our stored memories from previous experiences allow us to repeat certain tasks. For instance, after driving to a particular location, we recall the route the next time we make that trip. However, sometimes circumstances change?one road on the route is temporarily closed?and we need to make adjustments to reach our destination. Our behavioral flexibility allows us to make such changes and, then, successfully complete our task. It is driven, in part, by protein synthesis, which produces experience-dependent changes in neural function and behavior.

However, this process is impaired for many, preventing an adjustment in behavior when faced with different circumstances. In the Cell Reports study, the researchers sought to understand how protein synthesis is regulated during behavioral flexibility.

To do so, they focused on the kinase PERK, an enzyme that regulates protein synthesis. PERK is known to modify eIF2alpha, a factor that is required for proper protein synthesis. Their experiments involved comparing normal lab mice, which possessed the enzyme, with those that lacked it.

In their study, the mice were asked to navigate a water maze, which included elevating themselves onto a platform to get out of the water. Normal mice and those lacking PERK learned to complete this task.

However, in a second step, the researchers tested the mice's behavioral flexibility by moving the maze's platform to another location, thereby requiring them to respond to a change in the terrain. Here, the normal mice located the platform, but those lacking PERK were unable to do so or took significantly more time to complete the task.

A second experiment offered a different test of the role of PERK in aiding behavioral flexibility. In this measure, both normal and mutant mice heard an audible tone that was followed by a mild foot shock. At this stage, all of the mice developed a normal fear response?freezing at the tone in anticipation of the foot shock. However, the researchers subsequently removed the foot shock from the procedure and the mice heard only the tone. Eventually, the normal mice adjusted their responses so they did not freeze after hearing the tone. However, the mutant mice continued to respond as if they expected a foot shock to follow.

The researchers sought additional support for their conclusion that the absence of PERK may contribute to impaired behavioral flexibility in human neurological disorders. To do so, they conducted postmortem analyses of human frontal cortex samples from patients afflicted with schizophrenia, who often exhibit behavioral inflexibility, and unaffected individuals. The samples from the control group showed normal levels of PERK while those from the schizophrenic patients had significantly reduced levels of the protein.

"A rapidly expanding list of neurological disorders and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Fragile X syndrome, have already been linked to aberrant protein synthesis," explained Eric Klann, a professor in NYU's Center for Neural Science and one of the study's co-authors. "Our results show the significance of PERK in maintaining behavioral flexibility and how its absence might be associated with schizophrenia. Further studies clarifying the specific role of PERK-regulated protein synthesis in the brain may provide new avenues to tackle such widespread and often debilitating neurological disorders."

PUBLIC?SPEAKING Part 1

HOW TO DELIVER A SPEECH, TALK or LECTURE

By

VIKRAM KARVE

Definition of PUBLIC SPEAKING

Public speaking?is the process of?speaking?to a group of people in a structured, deliberate manner intended to inform, influence, or entertain the listeners. Whenever I begin to deliver a lecture,?before I start speaking, I tell myself this apocryphal story

:

A renowned Management Guru entered a large lecture hall to deliver a lecture on Motivation to the employees of a large industrial organization. To his horror he found that the large hall was empty except for a young man seated in the front row. The Management Guru asked the solitary audience who he was. ?I am a Cook in the Industrial Canteen,? said the young man. The Management Guru, pondering whether to speak or not, asked the Cook, ?You are the only one here. Do you think I should speak or not? Tell me frankly, should I deliver my lecture?? The Cook said to the Management Guru: ?Respected Sir, I am a simple man and do not understand these things.??But, if I came into the Dining Hall and saw only one man sitting there, I would certainly give him food.? The Management Guru took the Cook?s insightful answer to heart and with full gusto began to deliver his lecture. He spoke passionately for over two hours delving in great detail on each and every aspect of the theory and practice of Motivation. Immensely proud after his virtuoso performance, the Management Guru felt highly elated, on top of the world, and wanted his audience to confirm how fantastically illuminating and effective his lecture had been. So the Management Guru pompously asked the Cook, ?How did you like my lecture???

The Cook answered, ?Respected Sir, I told you already that I am a simple man and do not understand these things very well.?However,?if I came into the dining hall and found only one man sitting there I would feed him, but I wouldn?t give him all the food I had prepared in the kitchen.?
