Online assessment are at the heart of the promise of digital learning. Online assessments provide real time diagnostics that identify learning levels and gaps. Often embedded in learning experiences like games, online assessment provides instant feedback in reading, writing, math and other subjects. Online assessment will also improve test security -- no more eraser-Gate. Online assessment will power the future of customized learning -- the best chance we have to dramatically boost achievement levels.

Most states have started using some online assessments as part of their state testing program and they will finish the shift to fully online assessments in 2015. The two race to the top-funded state testing consortia -- SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) -- have both committed to using online assessment to make the next generation of state tests less expensive to administer with faster turnaround. Most importantly, developments in intelligent scoring have made it possible to include a significant amount of writing on these new tests as well as constructed response items and innovative performance tasks. The new tests will reflect the deeper learning aspirations of the Common Core State Standards.

In February, leading testing companies conducted a private demonstration showing very high levels of accuracy in scoring thousands of student essays (results will be made public on April 16). The Hewlett Foundation-funded Automated Student Assessment Prize (ASAP) has over 100 entrants; many are able to score essays with very high levels of accuracy and reliability. The $100,000 prize purse for the winners of the open competition will be awarded on May 9 in Washington, D.C..

The consortia have to this point remained silent about what kinds of devices their new test will run on. On one hand that implied flexibility but it is has also created some uncertainty -- many states and districts are anxious to get definitive answers so they can plan accordingly to develop high access environments.

The big question is whether the consortia will allow testing on tablets. Many schools are using tablets to create high access environments and for them using the tablets in state testing would seem like the natural solution. However, tablets as a testing option introduces lots of tough pedagogical, technological and psychometric (and eventually legal) questions. Consortia staff are aware of these issues and have plans for addressing them through research and field testing.

For me, writing is the big issue. I want to see American kids writing a lot in classrooms and on state tests. I still think of tablets as consumption devices and don't recommend them for high volume, high value production. So how would they work on state tests that require several essays? Where they are used, I suspect there will need to be several accommodations provided in tablet-centric districts including providing wireless keyboards for tablets, or providing access to laptops or computer labs for the writing component of the test. By 2015, touch screen writing may be better and widely used enough that this will be no big deal.

Comparability will be a challenge in a number of ways. What if some students have big screens and some have little screens? The ability to read a document and write a response side-by-side on one screen is highly desirable but hard to do on a tablet. What if some touch-enabled items were released and available to some kids but not others? If tablets are to be considered, the consortia will need to field-test all of these questions. It's probably most important that students be tested in the same or similar environment to their regular learning environment.

Over the next five to 10 years we need a better definition of comparability than 'the same instrument given on same day under the same conditions' -- a definition that allows multiple instruments and comparison of big data sets to inform the variety of jobs that we ask of tests. As I've said before, assessment will advance when it moves into the background.

But in the short run -- the next three years -- states and districts need to get ready for online assessment. One way or another I think the consortia will soon add some level of certainty around acceptable devices and there will be no excuse for not preparing to administer online assessments in 2015.

In January, PARCC and SBAC awarded a contract to Pearson to develop and administer, with the assistance of the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA), a Technology Readiness Tool. SETDA director Doug Levin (who is all over this issue) recently provided a great overview of online assessment and the readiness survey. Bryan Bleil is leading the effort for Pearson. While it will require some upgrades and additions, most districts already have enough computers to administer online assessment in a couple shifts (i.e., at least one computer for every three students), but the 2015 timeline does provide a perfect timeline to also make the shift to digital instructional materials. Like Florida, states should set a data not later than 2015 and begin planning the shift to online assessment and personal digital learning.

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness month.

We want to remind our readers that even though the month of March is ending, you should still schedule your regular colorectal cancer screening.

Colorectal cancer is not only the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women, but is also the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. More than 50,000 people die from colorectal cancer and almost three times that many people are diagnosed with the illness every year.

Deaths caused by cancer has been gradually decreasing from 2004 to 2008, says a new report from four major national cancer tracking groups. The decline in death rates may reflect against the progress made against the disease in regards to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

However, it doesn?t mean that the decline is simply up to doctors and experts; it is important for everyone to actively get regular screenings for colorectal cancer.

Screening for Colorectal Cancer

Many cases of colorectal cancers start as benign, noncancerous polyps, which then slowly develop into cancer. Colorectal cancer screenings can help find these polyps and remove them before they become more serious. Screenings can also catch cases of colorectal cancer early on, thus allowing for earlier and more effective cancer treatment.

More than 90% of colorectal cancer cases occur in individuals 50 years old and older. If all individuals that fall into this category were screened regularly, nearly 60% of deaths from this cancer could be prevented, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Medicare Coverage of Colorectal Cancer Screenings

For Medicare beneficiaries, you do not have to worry much about the costs when it comes to colorectal cancer screenings. Medicare covers a variety of screenings for colon and rectal cancer screenings. All Medicare beneficiaries are eligible for a screening colonoscopy while all other colorectal screenings are available to Medicare beneficiaries, who are age 50 years old or older.

As stated on Medicare.gov, these screenings and the frequencies of their coverage include:

Fecal Occult Blood Test: Once every 12 months.
Flexible Sigmoidoscopy: Generally, once every 48 months, or 120 months after a previous screening colonoscopy for people not at high risk.
Screening Colonoscopy: Generally once every 120 months (once every 24 months if you?re at high risk), or 48 months after a previous flexible sigmoidoscopy.
Barium Enema: Your doctor can decide to use this test instead of a flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. This test is covered every 24 months if you are at high risk for colorectal cancer and every 48 months if you aren?t at high risk.

In most cases, Medicare beneficiaries pay nothing out of pocket for fecal occult blood tests, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and screen colonoscopy, if your doctor accepts Medicare assignment. In the case of barium enemas, individuals on Medicare pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount and a copayment if the procedure is done in a hospital outpatient setting. The Medicare Part B deductible does not apply.

If you are age 50 or older or you have a family history of colorectal cancer, make sure to schedule regular colorectal cancer screenings to reduce your risk and to receive early treatment, if necessary.

Getting a colorectal cancer screening could mean the difference between life and death.

Scientists at the University of Liverpool have developed a new method to detect proteins associated with longevity, which helps further our understanding into why some animals live longer than others.

The team looked at the genome of more than 30 mammalian species to identify proteins that evolve in connection with the longevity of a species. They found that a protein, important in responding to DNA damage, evolves and mutates in a non-random way in species that are longer-lived, suggesting that it is changing for a specific purpose. They found a similar pattern in proteins associated with metabolism, cholesterol and pathways involved in the recycling of proteins.

Findings show that if certain proteins are being selected by evolution to change in long-lived mammals like humans and elephants, then it is possible that these species have optimised pathways that repair molecular damage, compared to shorter-lived animals, such as mice.

The study, led by Dr Joao Pedro Magalhaes and postgraduate student, Yang Li, is the first to show evolutionary patterns in biological repair systems in long-lived animals and could, in the future, be used to help develop anti-ageing interventions by identifying proteins in long-lived species that better respond to, for example, DNA damage. Proteins associated with the degradation of damaged proteins, a process that has been connected to ageing, were also linked with the evolution of longevity in mammals.

Dr Magalhaes, from the University's Institute of Integrative Biology, said: "The genetic basis for longevity differences between species remains a major puzzle of biology. A mouse lives less than five years and yet humans can live to over 100 for example. If we can identify the proteins that allow some species to live longer than others we could use this knowledge to improve human health and slow the ageing process.

"We developed a method to detect proteins whose molecular evolution correlates with longevity of a species. The proteins we detected changed in a particular pattern, suggesting that evolution of these proteins was not by accident, but rather by design to cope with the biological processes impacted by ageing, such as DNA damage. The results suggest that long-lived animals were able to optimise bodily repair which will help them fend off the ageing process."

Today we continue with John Knapp?s How the Church Fails Businesspeople (and what can be done about it). We turn now to Chapter 6, ?A Moral Theology of Work.?

The business environment can often present significant ethical challenges. Where might we begin as we think about ethical behavior? Knapp suggests a good place to start is with Micah 6:8:

?He has told you, O mortal, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God??

Grounded in Love

Knapp says this definition of what is good is grounded in the Jesus Creed: Love God, love neighbor. What would it mean to respond to others out of this ethic in business? Knapp writes:

?An ethic of love goes beyond both duty (keeping promises, telling the truth, doing a job well) and compliance (with civil law, contractual requirements, or employment policies), both of which are necessary in the workplace. Love recognizes that every person is unique and must be cared for individually, whether or not a rule mandates it. This requires us to take the time and effort to discover what actually meets the other?s need.? (101)

To Do Justice

Business people are to be advocates for justice within their sphere of influence. It goes beyond just upholding the law. It is about pursing more just structures and behaviors. Sadly, Knapp writes:

?Paul Camenisch, a theologian with expertise in business ethics, believes that the church has failed to convey to believers their personal responsibilities for doing justice at work. In a critique of Protestant policy statements on economic justice, he writes, ?Seldom if ever are Christians addressed as influential actors responsible in their vocations for seeing that, within their power, justice is done. They are not seriously challenged to ask questions? about the human impact of their actions as workers, managers, consumers, and owners on their fellows ?? As we have discussed, church pronouncements on economics tend to critique the macroeconomic system with little or no thought to the difficulties faced by individuals or organizations within the system.? (103)

To Love Kindness

We are not just to do kind things but to love kindness. We might easily see the natural application of this to our coworkers or customers. How about to our personal rivals or the competition?

To Walk Humbly

?It is easy fall prey to an illusion of becoming self-sufficient through the accumulation of material wealth.? (106) And with this sense of self-sufficiency can come a sense of entitlement. That entitlement can be evidenced in the form of smug condescension or even as envy of others for what should ?rightfully? be one?s own. For Christians there is a danger of self-righteous as we strive to be more ?Christ-like? than others. I?m inclined to think that walking humbly may be the slipperiest of all. Knapp sees it as the precondition for the first two.

Responsibility

Central to living out this ethic is an embrace of responsibility. Knapp writes:

?This [human] potential includes the capacity for genuine responsiveness in all relationships, for authentic discipleship is a process of learning to enact Christian love in every circumstance. H. Richard Niebuhr ? proposes that responsibility is defined chiefly by how we respond to others including God. This concept of responsibility as response-ability may be a better way to think about ethics than adherence to abstract more principles, compliance with rules, or even achievement of good outcomes. The responsible Christian must be fully attentive to the ?decisive present? and the possibilities of God?s activity through the lives of others.? (109)

With the response-ability we have, we are to make ?fitting responses? based on God?s justice.

Referring back to the survey results mentioned in the first post in this series (where people from all walks of life considered an ethical dilemma they had once faced), Knapp writes:

?Few of the dilemmas reported by our research subjects could be reduced to neat choices of right over wrong, good over bad. Nor were they problems where rules could determine the best course of action. The inherent difficulty in most of the cases involved conflicting values and priorities.? (111)

In short, ethical decisions are frequently messy. Two legitimate ethical concerns may be in competition with each other. On top of this, we are frequently distracted by competing demands and time pressures. All this requires conscious effort to be truly present in the decisions we are making.

Questions to guide us

Knapp offers a list of questions we might ask ourselves when we face difficult questions with justice, kindness, and humility grounded in love and responsibility (His questions with my summary sentence):

? What?s really going on here? ? Apply careful thought and investigation.
? What makes this decision difficult? ? What is the crux of the ethical challenge?
? Who has a legitimate stake in how this matter is resolved? ? Especially keep in mind those with less power or influence.
? Am I acting in humility, or are my own interests crowding out the interests of others? ? Look at things from the position of others.
? To whom and to what am I responsible? ? Be clear about our responsibilities and particularly our primary vocation of serving God.
? What options are available, and what outcomes may result from each? ? Be sure to consider long-term and broader consequences.
? Have I sought God?s will? ? Prayer, Scripture, and the discernment of other believers are important means of seeking God?s will.

The Necessary Role of the Church

Knapp closes the chapter with an important section called ?The Necessary Role of the Church.? He lists five facets of faith community that should be present to equip and support people in the workplace. (The short summaries of each listing are mine, not Knapp?s.)

A Community of Moral Discernment ? Rarely are any of us capable of answering the above questions on our own. Including people who know us, love us, share our commitment to God, and/or may have special insight into how to process some of these questions, are essential to sound discipleship.

A Community of Moral Discourse ? People within a faith community often don?t agree with each other on particular problems but it is often the civil debate about a problem that helps us individually to come to better conclusions. The church needs to be a place for honest questions.

A Community of Moral Influence ? Individuals often find they are powerless alone to address injustices that emerge in the work world. Congregations and denominational bodies are needed to work in support of efforts to reduce injustice and be supportive of businesspeople needing to take difficult stands.

A Community of Moral Encouragement ? The business world is frequently messy. Rather than casting businesspeople as tainted Christians, we need to pray for them and support them as they work to integrate their work and faith (even as we help build the expectation that they should do so. )

A Community of Moral Example ? The church needs to engage in just employment and financial practices if it expects the broader world to give any heed.

Concluding thoughts

This concludes the summary of Chapter 6. I?m not sure I?ve done it justice. I hope folks will read the book. But this chapter raised two issues for me that I want to briefly mention ? one economic and the other theological.

I love the use of the Micah passage grounded in love and responsibility as a starting point for ethical reflection. And Knapp is exactly right that love is not about having warm fuzzy sentiments but rather about knowing individuals and seeking their good. Knapp is calling us to look at the neglected realm of everyday micro-economic business decisions and giving us tools to live out our calling in that context. But as we move to the meso and macro levels of economics, to decisions that deal with large firms and interactions beyond the firm, I think it becomes impossible to meaningfully apply the ?love? principle.

A signature feature of advanced market economies is the ability of firms to gather and coordinate large numbers of people. Markets create vast webs of interconnection among people (who will likely never meet each other), allowing us to benefit from specialization and exchange with countless strangers. It is not possible for a businessperson to ?love? hundreds/thousands of others in a businessperson?s own firm, much less those outside the firm, in the sense we have described above. Theologian Economist Paul Heyne wrote in an essay (?Morality of Labor Unions.? Chapter 24 in Are Economists Basically Immoral?, 429.):

?What does justice mean in this world of completely impersonal transactions? If we take the most general definition of justice ? giving to each their due ? how do we decide what each is due? In such a world the Golden Rule is simply irrelevant. Social transactions in a market-coordinated economy cannot be governed by the principle ?Do for others what you would like them to do for you.? The appropriate rule is what someone has called the Silver Rule: ?Do not do to others anything that you would consider unfair if they did it to you.? (429)

I do not want to minimize the important framing that Knapp has offered here.? Rather, I want to emphasize that as we move much outside the sphere of face-to-face community, we encounter inescapable sociological realties that may require a different kind of ethical analysis. We can?t simply deal with larger institutions as a family (or face-to-face community) writ large. All the more reason why we need communities of disciples to help us work our way through ethical thickets.

The theological thought I had goes directly to Scot?s King Jesus Gospel. Scot rejects the Evangelical tendency to collapse ?gospel? into ?salvation.? The King Jesus Gospel is about Jesus?s completion of the story of Israel and that story is rooted in the creation story, including the first great commission of exercising dominion over creation and the redemption of that mission. But I don?t think it is just the Evangelical world in Protestantism that needs rethinking.

In my Mainline PCUSA world, gospel is typically about rectifying wrong, either via compassion or justice advocacy. If Evangelicals have a ?salvation gospel ,? as Scot says, then my tribe has a bias toward a ?justice gospel.? Just as the King Jesus Gospel includes salvation, it also includes justice, but ?gospel? cannot be collapsed into salvation, justice, or their combination. The King Jesus Gospel includes (among many other things) redemption of the first great commission. Neither the salvation gospel nor the justice gospel will do. Without the King Jesus Gospel there is no reason to give focused attention to the issues Knapp is raising. Work is peripheral to the ?real? issues of either salvation or justice. I think the real starting place for a moral theology of work likely must begin with our understanding of gospel.

People forget that the Mariners were actually holding their own for a time last year, flirting with .500 and even contention before a 17-game losing streak came along and just?obliterated everything. No, they?re not as good as they showed before the winning streak, but they won?t be as bad as they showed after it either. And with a somewhat better offense to go along with what seems like it will always be competent pitching in Seattle, the M?s should be pretty respectable for a team most people will pick to finish last.

We may be seeing the end days of Ichiro.?After ten straight??.300 average/200 hit seasons, Ichiro cratered last year, hitting .272 and getting on base at a mere .310 clip. ?That has cost him the leadoff position, and now he?ll bat third. No matter how they do in the won-loss department, one of the more interesting things to watch this year is whether Montero can catch. The Yankees seemed to think he was hopeless. The Mariners are a bit more optimistic about that, but it?s not as though they?re going to stick him behind the plate all the time. If he can catch at anything approaching a respectable level, his addition means a heck of a lot more than it would if he spent his entire career as a DH.
It?s a key year for Justin Smoak. He was expected by many to break out last season, but persona problems (the death of his father) and a nagging thumb injury kept from ever hitting full speed. ?Entering his age 25 season, it?s time for Smoak to live up to the hype.

How are they gonna do?

Better, but let?s be real here: this is a last place team. But not a horrible one. And it?s a team with a decent amount of hope going forward and a lot of young arms with promise. It?s nothing to get excited about yet, but at least it?s not something that will create existential dread either.
