Pick up the?phone!

A book is your golden ticket into the speak?ing busi?ness.? If you had a book pub?lished in the last 12 months, you have the call?ing card you need to get paid speak?ing engage?ments start?ing?now.

Pre?cisely how do you lever?age that book into speak?ing?? First, when the book is printed, ask the pub?lisher for a few hun?dred copies of the cover, as ?overrun.?

Usu?ally you can have them free or at cost.? They make large-sized, notice?able post?cards to send to meet?ing plan?ners to attract their atten?tion. In addi?tion ask for a copy of the press release the pub?lisher used and find out if you are fea?tured on your pub?lish?ers website.

Next, you want to get media.? Radio, print, tele?vi?sion appear?ances based on your book are all crit?i?cal.? Record the name of the show, the host and the date you appeared and put it on your web?site, in your speaker?s pack?age, and in your?file.

Your publisher?s PR team will be work?ing on your behalf, but take respon?si?bil?ity for your own press.? Even?tu?ally, you will col?lect all of your TV clips and ask a pro?fes?sional video edi?tor to com?bine it into an excel?lent mon?tage.? These will impress the heck out of a meet?ing plan?ner and should be used liberally.

Now that you?ve got some ammo, and assum?ing you have a web?site tout?ing your bril?liance and your book, it?s time to peti?tion all those hap?less meet?ing plan?ners out there.? Write let?ters, make phone calls, send post cards, fol?low up and be per?sis?tent.

You can buy a book of meet?ing plan?ners in any indus?try online.? Then, you make them your new friends.? Go to their meet?ings.? Hang out.? Cold call them and be friendly. Learn to be your own favorite employee.

I per?son?ally love cold call?ing.? I also don?t even notice rejec?tion any more because it?s just one step on the road to get?ting accepted. ?In the speaker train?ings I do, I make them all recite a mantra that will help their business:

?The most impor?tant thing that I can do is make 12 calls between 10 and 2.?? That is the min?i?mum I expect from a speaker-to-be.? Make 12 calls each day to meet?ing plan?ners, offer them you, a free copy of your book, send them a post?card thank?ing them for their time on the phone writ?ten on your book jacket cover, and make at least three fol?low up calls (or fewer if they tell you to quit calling.)

Make those 12 calls five days a week.? Give them what they ask you for.? If you do this, you will make 3,120 calls in a year.? You will have got?ten speak?ing engage?ments sim?ply by the law of aver?ages.? Your invest?ment of time will be small, but results can be?huge.

Good luck!
