IMPERIAL ? In order to offer online support to students outside of business hours, the Imperial Valley College Board of Trustees approved the decision to enter a contract with Blackboard for 24-hour support.
Blackboard is an online tool that allows faculty to add resources for students to access online such as PowerPoint presentations, Word documents or other class-related information.
Prior to moving to a 24-hour support system, if students ran into problems or had a question with how to use the online tool, they would only be able to receive help if it was during business hours.
The need to offer 24-hour assistance to students was made evident by the amount of traffic Blackboard received on a Sunday, said Todd Finnell, vice president for student services, technology and research.
?On Dec. 2 there was a total of 26,712 page views,? Finnell said. ?This goes to show students are utilizing the site outside of class and business hours.?
Associated Student Government President Lisa Tylenda made a strong case for the online tool, stating students are utilizing it due to its convenience and accessibility.
?It?s really an awesome tool to have,? Tylenda said.
The online tool is the direction the college hopes to keep moving toward.
?We?re looking to the future,? Finnell said. ?Everything is moving online including classes.?
The tool costs the college approximately $17,000 per year.
The funds to support the system were made available by a recent retirement. That vacancy will not be filled.
